President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched a transformative initiative aimed at reducing fuel prices and promoting the use of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to petrol. The initiative, called the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), seeks to address the skyrocketing cost of petrol, currently exceeding N900 per litre. Through this initiative, Tinubu’s administration plans to lower fuel prices to N230 per litre, providing much-needed relief to Nigerians.
Central to this initiative is the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits to commercial vehicle operators. These kits will enable vehicles currently reliant on petrol to transition to CNG, a cheaper and cleaner fuel. The conversion, which includes free installation, is expected to ease the financial strain on both transport operators and the general public, particularly in light of the recent removal of fuel subsidies.
In the first phase of the initiative, 10,000 conversion kits will be distributed across Nigeria. Over time, the program will expand nationwide, ensuring that transporters and consumers can fully benefit from CNG’s advantages. Conversion will be managed through a network of specialized centres, ensuring a seamless transition for commercial vehicles to the new fuel system.
This initiative not only offers immediate financial relief by lowering fuel costs but also supports the government’s broader strategy of diversifying Nigeria’s energy sources. By promoting CNG, the country is embracing a more sustainable and environmentally friendly fuel alternative, moving away from costly and polluting fossil fuels like petrol and diesel.
The government aims to complete the distribution of one million CNG conversion kits by the end of 2025, equipping Nigeria’s commercial transport sector with the tools necessary to adopt this cleaner fuel. This shift is expected to not only lower fuel prices but also contribute to the nation’s economic resilience by reducing dependence on imported petroleum products.
President Tinubu’s initiative underscores his administration’s commitment to addressing the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, particularly in the transportation sector, while simultaneously promoting cleaner energy solutions. The widespread adoption of CNG is anticipated to deliver significant long-term economic and environmental benefits for the country.
