Political Shake-Up in Kano: Kwankwaso’s Son and Commissioners Vacate Offices Ahead of Governor’s Defection

Several Kano State commissioners, including Mustapha Kwankwaso, the eldest son of former governor and NNPP leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have vacated their offices as signs of a political realignment and an expected cabinet reshuffle emerge.

Mustapha Kwankwaso, who is the state Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, is among officials seen as loyal to the former governor. While formal resignation letters have not yet been submitted, sources say these moves come ahead of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s planned defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Other commissioners and senior officials are also stepping aside from the governor’s office, reflecting a widening divide in the state executive council. Those expected to leave include commissioners for Science and Technology, Humanitarian Affairs, Internal Security, and Mineral Resources.

The tension comes amid a strained relationship between Governor Yusuf and Senator Kwankwaso, whose influence was central to the NNPP’s control in Kano. Analysts say the governor’s planned defection could split the party, forcing lawmakers and officials to choose between loyalty to Kwankwaso or support for the governor.

Some members of the Kano State House of Assembly are reportedly backing the governor’s move, citing internal conflicts within the NNPP that could affect elected positions if left unresolved. The situation may lead to a wider cabinet reshuffle, allowing the governor to bring in commissioners and aides who support his new political direction.

Observers describe the development as a turning point in Kano politics, signaling a shift in the state’s political scene ahead of future elections. The state government has not yet commented, but more resignations and announcements are expected in the coming days.
