The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done much for the people of Rivers State, stating that the state would return the favour in the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the statement while addressing supporters during a political gathering in Rivers State, against the backdrop of growing criticism over his political alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) despite being a leading figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to the minister, President Tinubu’s actions and decisions have benefited Rivers State, adding that political support often follows goodwill and cooperation. He said those attacking his political choices do not fully understand how politics works or how interests shape governance.
Reacting to calls by some critics for his removal from office, Wike dismissed the demands, stressing that only President Tinubu has the power to appoint or remove him as minister. He described such calls as baseless and politically motivated.
Wike also responded to personal criticism directed at him, saying he deliberately chose to be a politician and not a pastor, trader, journalist, or public commentator. He urged his critics to allow him to carry out his role in politics, noting that public office naturally attracts criticism.
He added that politics is driven by interests and negotiation rather than emotions, insisting that he remains focused on his political objectives and responsibilities. According to him, criticism will not distract him from engaging in the political process as he sees fit.
The remarks come amid ongoing political tension in Rivers State, as discussions around political loyalty, influence, and alignments ahead of the 2027 elections continue to generate debate across the state and beyond.
