Nigerian Army Orders All Personnel to Submit NINs to Access Tax Exemptions Under Tinubu’s Reforms

The Nigerian Army has directed all serving personnel across its formations, units, and departments to submit their National Identification Numbers (NIN) as part of compliance with the Federal Government’s ongoing tax reforms.

The directive, issued via a memo by the Department of Army Administration on January 12, 2026, aims to ensure that military personnel are eligible for tax exemptions under President Bola Tinubu’s newly implemented fiscal policies.

The directive comes as part of a broader government effort to modernize Nigeria’s tax system. Under the recent reforms, the NIN has been designated as the official Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individual taxpayers.

This measure is designed to improve transparency, streamline tax administration, and expand the country’s revenue base. Military personnel, like other citizens, are now required to link their NIN to official tax records to benefit from exemptions and avoid potential compliance issues.

For the Nigerian Army, this means updating personnel records to reflect accurate NIN information. Soldiers who have not yet registered for a NIN may need to do so promptly to avoid delays in accessing tax reliefs. Analysts say the move underscores the government’s push to integrate digital identification with fiscal administration, making it easier to track taxpayers and enforce compliance.

The Tinubu administration has emphasized that these reforms are part of a wider effort to strengthen the nation’s financial system while providing relief to specific groups, including military personnel. By linking the NIN with tax records, the government seeks to ensure that only eligible individuals benefit from exemptions while minimizing loopholes in the tax system.

The Nigerian Army’s directive signals a coordinated effort between the military and the federal government to align personnel management with national tax policies.

As Nigeria continues to modernize its fiscal framework, ensuring accurate NIN registration for all citizens, including those in uniform, will be essential to fully implementing the reforms.
