ABUJA — In a defining moment for Nigeria’s political landscape, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) concluded its inaugural National Convention on Saturday. The landmark event culminated in the strategic zoning of the party’s presidential ticket to the South-East region and the formal unveiling of the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance—a formidable coalition poised to challenge the status quo ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Drawing a diverse consortium of delegates, regional stakeholders, and grassroots organizations nationwide, the convention’s agenda centered on national cohesion, economic revitalization, and comprehensive security reform.

The “New Nigeria” Agenda
Senior party officials emphasized that the resolution to zone the presidency to the South-East is a deliberate institutional measure to foster geopolitical equity and national balance. Furthermore, the newly crystallized alliance between Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso was heralded by party stalwarts as a necessary paradigm shift, offering a pragmatic blueprint to navigate Nigeria out of its compounding socioeconomic crises.
Addressing the convention, Obi and Kwankwaso delivered a synchronized message highlighting the critical need to restore state security, stimulate economic productivity, and alleviate the pervasive hardship afflicting the populace.
”Our objective is the architecture of a New Nigeria—a nation defined by public safety, judicial integrity, food security, and robust educational frameworks, ensuring universal opportunities for all citizens to prosper,” the leaders stated in a joint declaration.
Condemning the proliferation of insurgent violence and the consequent displacement of rural communities, the alliance prioritized the safe repatriation of internally displaced persons (IDPs).

”Citizens disenfranchised by insecurity must be securely reintegrated into their communities,” they affirmed. “Our administration will prioritize the stabilization of the republic, fostering an ecosystem where productivity inherently displaces poverty.”
Internal Friction and Procedural Disputes
While the convention successfully established a progressive trajectory for the NDC, the proceedings were briefly overshadowed by internal friction at the party’s National Secretariat.
Tensions escalated when delegates from Imo State staged a protest over the alleged manipulation of accreditation protocols. The aggrieved faction accused the National Vice Chairman (South-East), Chief Teddy Ikechukwu Obeh , of deliberately withholding delegate tags. This maneuver, they argued, was a calculated attempt to disenfranchise legitimate stakeholders and subvert the convention’s democratic integrity. Consequently, the protesters called for the immediate removal of Chief Ikechukwu, warning that such electoral machinations could fatally undermine the party’s credibility at a pivotal juncture.
Intervening to de-escalate the situation, Barrister Reginald Ikechukwu, the Imo State Party Chairman, condemned the procedural anomalies while appealing to the delegates for tactical restraint. He highlighted the foundational sacrifices made by local stakeholders, cautioning against the destabilizing influence of political opportunism.
”We have invested immense political capital into the growth of this party, and we will fiercely guard the collective achievements of our dedicated members,” he stated.
Despite the localized unrest, swift intervention by the National Secretariat managed to diffuse the immediate tension. Party leadership ultimately projected confidence that the NDC would transparently navigate its internal disputes, emerging as a fortified and unified entity ahead of the impending electoral cycle.
