Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concern over the safety of former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, while calling on authorities to protect his rights and ensure that no action is taken against him that could threaten his security.

Atiku, a prominent opposition figure, urged political leaders and government institutions to uphold the principles of democracy by respecting the rights, freedoms, and safety of all Nigerians, irrespective of their political affiliations.

The former vice president also demanded the release of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, stressing that every citizen deserves fair treatment and that the rule of law must remain the foundation of governance in the country.

According to Atiku, the strength of any democracy is measured by the ability of its institutions to protect citizens, encourage political participation, and resolve disagreements through lawful and peaceful means.

He warned that actions perceived as intimidation or suppression of political voices could weaken public confidence in democratic institutions and create unnecessary tension within the country.

Atiku maintained that political differences should not become a reason for hostility, adding that Nigeria’s leaders must work toward creating an environment where opposing views are respected and freely expressed.

He called on security agencies and relevant authorities to remain professional, impartial, and committed to protecting the rights of every Nigerian, regardless of status or political leaning.

The former vice president further emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy has been strengthened over the years through tolerance, dialogue, and respect for diverse opinions, urging leaders to avoid actions that could threaten national unity.

The call for El-Rufai’s release has also added to ongoing conversations about the role of government institutions in handling matters involving political figures. Stakeholders have continued to stress the importance of transparency, accountability, and adherence to due process.

Political observers say the issues raised by Atiku reflect broader concerns about democratic freedoms, political stability, and the need for stronger institutions capable of handling disagreements fairly.

As political activities continue to intensify, Atiku urged Nigerians and leaders across the political divide to prioritize peace, justice, and the protection of democratic values for the progress of the nation.
