The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has firmly rejected calls for the resignation of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, over the death of Mary Habila, insisting that Nigerians should allow security agencies to conclude their investigations before reaching any conclusions.

In a statement released on Friday, the organization described the growing demands for Umahi’s resignation as premature and unsupported by any established findings, stressing that the principles of justice and due process must be respected in a democratic society.

Ohanaeze expressed deep sympathy to the family of the late Mary Habila, describing her death as a tragic incident that deserves a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation. However, the group cautioned against attributing blame or making political demands before the facts have been fully established.

According to the organization, every Nigerian is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise, adding that public opinion should not replace the legal process. It maintained that only the outcome of a credible investigation should determine responsibility in the matter.

The group urged the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to carry out a comprehensive investigation without fear or favour, assuring the public that accountability must be based on evidence rather than speculation or emotions.

Ohanaeze also condemned the spread of misinformation and unverified claims on social media, warning that false narratives could inflame public tensions, mislead citizens, and undermine confidence in the country’s justice system. It encouraged Nigerians to rely on verified information from official sources while the investigation continues.

The organization further called on political actors, civil society groups, and members of the public to exercise restraint and avoid statements capable of prejudicing the investigative process. It noted that allowing law enforcement agencies to perform their duties without interference remains essential to achieving justice.

Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law, Ohanaeze emphasized that no individual should be shielded from accountability if found culpable. At the same time, it insisted that no public official should be condemned without credible evidence or a fair legal process.

The group expressed confidence that the ongoing investigation would uncover the true circumstances surrounding Mary Habila’s death and urged Nigerians to remain peaceful, patient, and united while awaiting the outcome.

The statement concluded with a renewed appeal for calm, emphasizing that justice is best served through due process, transparency, and respect for the law. According to Ohanaeze, safeguarding these principles is essential to maintaining public trust and preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
