Abia State Governor Alex Otti has rejected claims that the South-East has collectively endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 presidential election, insisting that no individual leader has the authority to speak on behalf of the entire region.
Otti’s reaction followed a statement by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who had expressed support for President Tinubu’s bid for another term and suggested that the South-East governors were aligned with the move.
However, the Abia governor disagreed with the impression that the position represented the views of all South-East governors or the people of the region. He maintained that political choices are personal decisions that should not be presented as a collective agreement without proper consultation.
According to Otti, while Uzodimma has the right to support any candidate of his choice, such support should be regarded as his individual position and not that of the entire South-East.
The Abia governor emphasized that the people of the region have diverse political opinions and should be allowed to make their own decisions when the time comes. He added that voters, rather than political leaders alone, will ultimately determine the outcome of the 2027 election.
The disagreement highlights growing political discussions ahead of the 2027 presidential race, as leaders across different regions continue to express their positions on the future direction of the country.
Otti’s comments have further fueled conversations about regional representation, political consensus, and whether individual endorsements can truly reflect the views of a broad and diverse population.
