Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has launched a fresh criticism of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing him as “desperate” and dismissing his repeated assurances that Nigeria’s deep-rooted challenges can be resolved within a single four-year presidential term.
Speaking during a political gathering, Oshiomhole argued that Nigeria’s economic, security and governance problems have developed over several decades and require sustained reforms rather than what he described as overly ambitious campaign promises.
The former governor maintained that while every political leader is entitled to present a vision for the country, Nigerians should be realistic about the scale of the nation’s challenges. According to him, no administration can completely reverse years of economic decline, insecurity, unemployment and infrastructural deficits in just one term.
“Peter Obi is desperate. He can’t fix Nigeria in four years,” Oshiomhole said, insisting that meaningful development demands patience, continuity and carefully implemented policies over time.
He further defended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying many of the reforms currently being implemented are difficult but necessary decisions aimed at repositioning the country’s economy for long-term growth. He argued that reforms often come with temporary hardship before their benefits become evident.
Oshiomhole also urged Nigerians to carefully examine the records and achievements of political leaders instead of relying solely on campaign promises. He stressed that leadership should be judged by experience, capacity and the ability to implement practical solutions to national problems.
The comments have generated widespread reactions across Nigeria’s political landscape, with supporters of both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Labour Party taking to social media to defend their respective positions.
Supporters of Peter Obi insist that prudent management of public resources, aggressive anti-corruption measures, institutional reforms and fiscal discipline could deliver significant improvements within four years. They argue that effective leadership, rather than the length of time in office, is the key to national transformation.
However, supporters of Oshiomhole maintain that rebuilding a country as large and complex as Nigeria requires long-term commitment, policy consistency and cooperation among successive administrations to achieve lasting progress.
Political analysts believe the latest remarks underscore the intensifying political contest ahead of the 2027 general elections, as leading figures from both the ruling party and the opposition continue to present contrasting visions for Nigeria’s future.
