As the political atmosphere gradually builds ahead of the 2027 general elections, the people of Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta/Oru West Federal Constituency are once again being presented with an opportunity to reflect on the quality of representation they desire at the National Assembly.
Among the political figures whose records are being brought back into public conversation is Hon. Engr. Uju Kingsley Chima, a former member of the House of Representatives who represented the Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta/Oru West Federal Constituency from 2019 to 2023.
Chima, who hails from Ohaji/Egbema and is seeking to return to the House of Representatives under the platform of the Action People’s Party (APP), is entering the 2027 contest with a political record that supporters say deserves another opportunity.
For many constituents, the central question is not merely about political affiliation but about the capacity of a representative to understand the needs of the people and translate that understanding into programmes and opportunities that directly affect their lives.
Having previously served in the House of Representatives, Uju Kingsley Chima brings with him the experience of legislative duties and an understanding of the workings of the National Assembly.
His supporters believe that this experience gives him an advantage as he seeks another mandate. Unlike a first-time Candidate who would have to learn the legislative environment from the beginning, Chima already understands the responsibilities attached to federal representation and the importance of constituency engagement.
The Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta/Oru West constituency is strategically important, with a population whose interests cut across rural communities, young people, farmers, entrepreneurs, workers and professionals.
For such a constituency, representation goes beyond speaking on the floor of the House. It also involves identifying opportunities, attracting programmes and ensuring that constituents are connected to initiatives capable of improving their economic circumstances.
Employment and Youth Empowerment
One of the major issues likely to shape the 2027 conversation is youth employment.
During his previous tenure, Chima was associated with employment programmes and opportunities for young people from the constituency. His supporters point to these interventions as part of the reasons he deserves another opportunity to represent them.
At a time when unemployment and underemployment remain major concerns for young Nigerians, employment opportunities can make a significant difference in the lives of families and communities.
For the youths of Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta/Oru West, therefore, the prospect of a representative who has previously focused attention on employment programmes could become an important consideration in deciding who should receive their mandate in 2027.
The argument from his camp is that representation should produce tangible benefits for the people, particularly by creating pathways through which young constituents can acquire jobs, skills and economic opportunities.
Another factor supporters are likely to emphasise is Chima’s connection with the constituency.
As an indigene of Ohaji/Egbema, he is familiar with the aspirations and challenges confronting the people of the area. His political journey has also given him experience in representing the four local government areas that make up the federal constituency.
Such familiarity, supporters contend, can help strengthen communication between the representative and constituents.
The 2027 election, therefore, could provide voters with an opportunity to compare experience, previous performance and future promises before deciding on the direction they want their constituency to take.
The argument for Chima’s return is largely built around continuity.
His supporters maintain that where a former representative has programmes or initiatives that constituents believe were beneficial, returning such a person to office can provide an opportunity to build upon previous efforts rather than begin again from scratch.
In their view, Chima’s previous experience in the House, combined with his knowledge of constituency politics and his emphasis on employment opportunities for young people, makes him a strong contender for the 2027 race.
They argue that the constituency needs a representative who can combine legislative experience with effective constituency engagement and a commitment to economic opportunities for the people.
Although Chima is seeking the seat under the APC platform, the choice before voters ultimately extends beyond party colours.
For the electorate, the key consideration will be who can effectively represent their interests, attract meaningful opportunities and remain responsive to the needs of the people.
In a democratic society, elections provide citizens with the opportunity to assess the records of those who have served before and compare them with the promises of new contenders.
For supporters of Chima, his previous tenure from 2019 to 2023 is therefore a reference point from which they believe voters can judge his capacity.
2027 and the Choice Before the Constituency:
As the 2027 elections draw closer, Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta/Oru West Federal Constituency is expected to witness intense political mobilisation.
The contest will inevitably generate debate about development, representation, employment, infrastructure, youth empowerment and the future of the constituency.
Within that debate, the candidacy of Hon. Engr. Uju Kingsley Chima presents a familiar political option to constituents who remember his time in the House between 2019 and 2023.
His supporters are making a straightforward case: that his previous legislative experience, his understanding of the constituency and his involvement in employment programmes and opportunities for young people provide sufficient grounds for another mandate.
Ultimately, the decision rests with the electorate.
But as voters prepare for another important electoral contest, the case for re-electing Uju Kingsley Chima will be anchored on the belief that experience should count, previous constituency engagement should matter, and programmes that create opportunities for young people should remain a priority.
For the people of Ohaji/Egbema/Oguta/Oru West, the 2027 election is therefore not simply another political contest. It is an opportunity to evaluate the past, consider the present and decide what kind of representation they want for the future.
