The Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that the 2027 General Election will be transparent, credible, and powered by modern technology.

Speaking during a national strategic retreat for senior INEC officials, he emphasized that the commission is committed to ensuring an election that reflects the true will of the people. He vowed that any form of misconduct or manipulation in the electoral process would not be tolerated, and that the commission would take all necessary steps to uphold the integrity of the polls.

Prof. Amupitan highlighted that millions of Nigerians, as well as local and international observers, will be closely watching INEC’s preparations. He stressed that the 2027 elections should set a benchmark for transparency and accountability, aiming to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.

According to him, this goal will be achieved through both rigorous planning and the deployment of advanced technological systems that can minimize errors, reduce electoral fraud, and ensure real-time tracking of election results.

Central to INEC’s strategy is the use of technology, particularly the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the Result Viewing Portal (IReV). These tools help verify the identity of voters, prevent multiple voting, and allow results from polling units to be uploaded and monitored almost instantly.

By integrating technology into the electoral process, INEC hopes to enhance transparency, provide accurate election data, and reduce longstanding issues such as voter impersonation and result manipulation.

Despite the promising outlook, Prof. Amupitan acknowledged challenges, particularly in areas with limited internet connectivity, which could hinder real-time result transmission. To address this, the commission is actively working with telecommunications companies and other partners to ensure that technological systems function efficiently even in remote locations.

He emphasized that technology alone cannot guarantee a perfect election, but when combined with strict adherence to electoral laws and regulations, it can significantly strengthen the credibility of the process.

The commission’s pledge comes amid calls from civil society groups, political stakeholders, and advocacy organizations for reforms aimed at strengthening INEC’s independence and operational capacity.

These groups have urged legislative and institutional adjustments that would limit political interference and provide INEC with the autonomy needed to conduct fair elections.
As preparations intensify, the 2027 general elections are being positioned as a historic opportunity for Nigeria to demonstrate its commitment to democratic principles.

The commission’s focus on transparency, efficiency, and technology-driven processes is seen as a step toward achieving elections that are not only credible but also widely trusted by citizens and observers alike. With these measures, INEC aims to ensure that the voice of every Nigerian is heard, counted, and reflected in the outcome of the elections.
