Members of the House of Representatives have called for a full investigation into the recent accident involving the Itakpe–Warri train service, while also demanding compensation for passengers affected by the incident.
The lawmakers expressed concern over the mishap, describing it as unacceptable and avoidable, and stressed the need to determine its cause. They noted that public confidence in rail transport depends on safety, accountability, and quick response to incidents.
During plenary discussions, the House urged relevant authorities to carry out a comprehensive probe into the circumstances surrounding the accident, including possible operational or technical failures that may have contributed to it.
The lawmakers also called on the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and other concerned agencies to ensure that victims who suffered injuries, losses, or trauma receive appropriate support and compensation without delay.
They added that lessons from the incident must be used to strengthen safety standards, improve monitoring systems, and prevent future occurrences across the country’s railway network.
The development has sparked renewed public concern over rail safety in Nigeria, with growing calls for stricter regulations, better maintenance practices, and improved emergency response systems within the transport sector.
