The Chairman of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC), Hon. Charles Ejiogu, has officially confirmed that the much-anticipated Local Government elections will take place across all 305 wards in the state on Saturday, September 21, 2024. In a press briefing held in Owerri, the state capital, Hon. Ejiogu stressed the commission’s commitment to conducting the elections as scheduled, ensuring that the democratic process at the grassroots level is upheld.
According to Hon. Ejiogu, those elected during the polls will serve a fixed tenure of two years. This clarification is significant, as it sets clear expectations for the length of service for the incoming local government officials. The two-year term, though shorter than typical tenures, is aimed at improving governance and promoting accountability within the local government councils.
“The election must hold as planned, and all arrangements have been put in place to ensure a smooth and credible process,” Hon. Ejiogu stated. He assured the public and political stakeholders of ISIEC’s preparedness and commitment to conducting a free, fair, and transparent election.
As the state gears up for the elections, the focus now shifts to ensuring peaceful conduct and encouraging voter participation across the 305 wards. These elections are crucial in determining the leadership that will guide the development and governance of Imo State’s local governments for the next two years.
