Peter Obi Explains Decision to Join Coalition with Former Political Leaders Ahead of 2027 Elections

by admin

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has explained his decision to align with a newly formed opposition coalition that includes several former political leaders, some of whom are widely seen as having failed in past governance roles.

Obi stated that his choice to work with the coalition was based on the need for broad experience and unity among opposition forces in the effort to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. He noted that both success and failure offer valuable lessons in governance and that rebuilding the country requires drawing from a wide pool of knowledge and expertise.

The National Opposition Coalition Group, which was recently formed by politicians from various parties, has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 elections. Prominent figures in the group include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, as well as former governors Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Gabriel Suswam, and Sule Lamido. Also playing key roles in the coalition are David Mark, a former Senate President, and Rauf Aregbesola, a former governor, who have been named interim national chairman and secretary of the ADC, respectively.

Addressing concerns about collaborating with individuals from past administrations, Obi emphasized that the focus should be on building a credible and effective alliance to drive change. He argued that meaningful progress requires contributions from a mix of individuals, regardless of their past, so long as they are committed to national development.
