The spokesperson clarified that the demolition of these unauthorized constructions was imperative due to their disruption of roadways, particularly on market days, exacerbating traffic congestion.
The Division of Urban Development Oversight, FCT Authority (FCTA) under the guidance of Nyesom Wike has issued 24-hour demolition notifications to operators of illicit markets and makeshift shelters along the Karmo Dei-Dei Road corridor.
It was reported that more than 500 unauthorized edifices and makeshift shelters situated along the road corridor have been targeted for demolition.
Mr. Garba Jibril, the Sector Supervisor and Deputy Director in the department overseeing the operation in Abuja on Monday, stated that the affected proprietors had been served multiple notifications.
Jibril further mentioned that the Head of Urban Development Oversight, Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, had conducted an awareness session with the stakeholders.
He elaborated that the removal of the unauthorized structures was essential due to their obstruction of the roadway, exacerbating traffic congestion, particularly on market days.
He also highlighted that their operations were generating environmental risks, which the FCT Authority disapproved of.
The team leader also revealed that the FCTA had contracted the construction of the Life Camp – Dei-Dei Road.
However, he noted that the continued presence of traders on the road corridor was hindering the contractors from accessing the site.
He emphasized that the 24-hour notice should not be taken lightly, and those who fail to comply will face consequences.
He also stated that the traders had been instructed to relocate to the designated market known as Karmo Market, noting that the market was fully developed and equipped with necessary amenities.
“However, the traders have been reluctant to relocate.
“We have conducted numerous meetings with relevant stakeholders, including local leaders in the area, to persuade them to relocate, but they have remained obstinate.
“We have also convened a meeting with the traders and the new market operators, who have pledged to provide incentives to accommodate the traders in both informal and formal shops.
“We hope that after the demolition, there will be a successful relocation from the road corridor to the main market.
“This will not only ensure a peaceful environment but also facilitate the smooth flow of traffic in the area,” Jibril asserted.
