A civil society group called Onurube has spoken out against the constant harassment, wrongful arrest, and detention of Mr. Stanley Obichere, who is a medical student from Umunjam Mbieri in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
The group’s leader, Marjorie Ezihe, said in a statement that Mr. Stanley Obichere was arrested in Enugu, where he is working as a house officer. He was then moved to Abuja on May 29, 2024, based on unproven accusations. He is currently held at the Special Tactical Squad (STS) unit in Apo, directed by DG Ibrahim.
Onurube criticized the misuse of police power, calling it a violation of basic rights and serious wrongdoing. They called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, and other senior police officers in Zones 9 and 13, as well as police commissioners in Enugu and Imo states, to look into the matter properly. The group also demanded an end to moving cases without following proper procedures and emphasized the need to respect the court system.
Chinwe Obichere, Stanley’s mother, was also reportedly taken from a court area, detained, and sent to Abuja on false charges made by her sisters-in-law. She was held for six days and has been deeply affected by this experience and her son’s arrest.
Mrs. Obichere explained that her family has been continuously harassed by her husband’s sisters. They have taken advantage of her husband, Mr. Emmanuel Obichere, who is mentally ill. They sold family properties without his approval and tore down part of their father’s house. Despite asking for help from community leaders and filing a complaint with the Imo State Police, the issue remains unresolved and is currently in the Achi Mbieri Customary Court.
