Renowned figures in Nigerian politics, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, a former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, and Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a respected leader in Afenifere, have joined voices in calling for a comprehensive restructuring of Nigeria’s constitution. They argue that the current legal framework falls short in addressing the multitude of challenges plaguing the nation and advocate for the adoption of the resolutions put forth during the 2014 Sovereign National Conference.
Anyaoku, speaking at the National Constitutional Dialogue organized by The Patriots, emphasized the urgent need for a new constitution. He stressed the importance of meaningful discussions among eminent Nigerians to drive progress effectively. Anyaoku highlighted the necessity for an inclusive approach to constitution-making, advocating for legislative mechanisms that empower citizens to actively participate in the amendment process. He cited examples of federal overreach and inefficiencies in the current federal structure, underscoring the need for a constitution that genuinely reflects Nigeria’s diversity and addresses its pressing issues.
In his capacity as Chairman of The Patriots, Anyaoku reiterated the shortcomings of the existing constitution and proposed either embracing the recommendations of the 2014 national conference or convening an impartial constituent assembly to draft a truly federal constitution. He emphasized the importance of rectifying deficiencies in areas such as security, economy, infrastructure, social cohesion, and national unity, which have been exacerbated by the limitations of the current legal framework.
Echoing Anyaoku’s sentiments, elder statesman Adebanjo called for the implementation of the resolutions from the 2014 National Conference. He argued that the conference, which saw participation from diverse segments of Nigerian society, accurately represents the aspirations of the people. Adebanjo dismissed the idea of merely amending the current constitution, favored by the National Assembly, asserting that a complete overhaul is necessary to address the root causes of Nigeria’s challenges.
Adebanjo emphasized the importance of a constitution that reflects the true desires of the Nigerian people and called for a transparent and inclusive process in its formulation. He highlighted the need for accountability, fairness, and justice in governance, which he believes can only solve the problems of Nigeria.
