Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was on Monday present at a protest in Abuja where police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators.

The protest, linked to ongoing civic demonstrations in the Federal Capital Territory, turned chaotic after security operatives deployed tear gas canisters to break up the crowd, forcing protesters to flee in different directions for safety.

According to reports from Vanguard and other media outlets, Sowore was caught up in the tear gas dispersal and became unwell during the incident, with witnesses saying he appeared weak and disoriented and had to be assisted away from the scene for medical attention.

Some accounts further claimed he collapsed during the confusion, although there has been no official medical confirmation or police statement verifying a full collapse.

He was later reported to have received medical attention and recovered, though details about his condition remain limited.

The Nigeria Police Force has not issued a detailed statement on Sowore’s condition at the time of filing this report.

The incident adds to a pattern of tense confrontations between security operatives and protesters in Abuja, where tear gas has frequently been used to disperse crowds.

Sowore, known for leading and supporting several anti-government protests, has repeatedly criticized the use of force against peaceful demonstrators.
