A high-level Nigerian government delegation, acting on the directive of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, met earlier today with officials at the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Justice to discuss the case of Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who has been detained in Britain since March 2023.

The delegation was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and included the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi. After their meeting with British officials, the team visited the Nigerian High Commission in London, where they were received by Ambassador Mohammed Maidugu, the Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

According to diplomatic sources, discussions centered on possible legal and diplomatic interventions aimed at ensuring a fair and transparent process in the ongoing case. The delegation is also expected to hold additional consultations with relevant UK authorities to explore next steps.

The initiative has been widely commended as a reflection of President Tinubu’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of Nigerians abroad. Many have noted that the administration’s engagement on the matter marks a shift toward stronger diplomatic advocacy compared to previous years.

Nigerians at home and in the diaspora have expressed optimism that the talks will lead to a positive outcome and that Senator Ekweremadu’s case will be treated with fairness and due consideration under British law.
